Ganderbal, May 19 (KNO): In the rugged heart of Kashmir's Ganderbal district, where the river Sindh flows fast and unforgiving, a man has become a beacon of hope for those facing the river's wrath. Haris Bashir Rather (25), prominently known as “Harry” by locals, has built a quiet legacy through daring rescue missions and unshakable commitment to saving lives. Hailing from a modest background, Harry’s connection with the water began in childhood. But it was the guidance of his mentor, Bashir Ahmad Mir that shaped his destiny. Under Mir’s mentorship, Harry learned to read the river like a book—anticipating its movements, respecting its power, and mastering its flow. Over the years, Harry has become a familiar sight along the treacherous Ganderbal-Sonamarg highway, where frequent accidents send vehicles plunging into the river. While many watch helplessly, Harry acts. Whether it’s pulling survivors or recovering the bodies, he is often the first to leap into action, working alongside the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Harry humbly stated, “I jump into the gushing water to save lives or retrieve bodies—it’s my passion.” His selfless acts have earned him admiration across the Valley, though Harry himself remains indifferent to fame. Social media clips of his rescue efforts have gone viral, but for Harry, each mission is less about recognition and more about service. Tragedies like the recent drowning of a youth in Kangan’s Haknar Gund Power Canal highlight just how vital Harry’s role has become. His presence at the scene, working tirelessly with the SDRF and local police, not only sped up the recovery efforts but also offered emotional comfort to grieving families. Harry stands out as a symbol of human resilience and compassion. One local described him as “the embodiment of bravery,” saying his actions bring both hope and healing to communities living in fear of the river. Asked what drives him to risk his life for others, Harry’s answer is simple: “For the pleasure of the Almighty.” His faith, humility, and sense of duty form the foundation of a remarkable life devoted to helping others. While his story may not fill the pages of history books, Haris Bashir Rather’s actions have already left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. In every rescue and every life saved, he reminds us that true heroism lies not in grand gestures, but in quiet, consistent acts of courage—(KNO)
