Haris Bashir Rather (25), prominently known as “Harry” by locals, has built a quiet legacy through daring rescue missions and unshakable commitment to saving lives.
Hailing from a modest background, Harry’s connection with the water began in childhood. But it was the guidance of his mentor, Bashir Ahmad Mir that shaped his destiny.
Under Mir’s mentorship, Harry learned to read the river like a book—anticipating its movements, respecting its power, and mastering its flow.
Over the years, Harry has become a familiar sight along the treacherous Ganderbal-Sonamarg highway, where frequent accidents send vehicles plunging into the river.
While many watch helplessly, Harry acts. Whether it’s pulling survivors or recovering the bodies, he is often the first to leap into action, working alongside the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Harry humbly stated, “I jump into the gushing water to save lives or retrieve bodies—it’s my passion.”
